I Love Horses
Activity Patch

Your troop can enjoy an afternoon of outdoor horse activities at our lovely ranch facility.

Activities include:

  • Caring for Horses. Scouts will learn about feeding horses, stable accommodations and horse care (grooming, shoeing, veterinary, etc). Each scout will be allowed to feed a horse a special treat. Who is a farrier? Why do horses wear shoes? How often do they need new shoes? They will learn these answers and make a “lucky” shoe project to take home.
  • Fashion and Function. Correct and safe clothing for practice, horse shows and trail riding will be reviewed. The scouts will create a collagé of appropriate and fashionable clothing and gear.
  • Song of the Horse. While working on their projects, the girls will be exposed to some of the great cowboy ballads of an age gone by with additional discussion.
  • Career with Horses. Three possible careers with horses will be explored including information about the education, training and on-hand experience is required for these careers.
  • Ease with equipment. Each scout will learn the basic parts of the saddle and bridle (tack). They will also learn how to clean and maintain the tack and assist in saddling and bridling a horse.
  • Horse “Tales.” Scouts will learn about the legendary exploits of real-life famous horses.

FINALLY…the girls will receive an introduction to basic riding skills with a 30 minute lesson. With their saddled and bridled horse, each girl will learn how to properly and safely mount a horse, walk, stop, steer, turn and jog (with or without a lead-line person).
